Following a series of sewer overflows that occurred throughout the state during Hurricanes Hermine and Matthew, Governor Scott directed DEP to investigate the overflows and identify underlying causes and potential solutions. Governor Scott instructed DEP to evaluate the overflows, determine the underlying causes, and work with wastewater utilities to identify solutions that will help prevent overflows in the future to ensure clean drinking water and healthy waterways.
Staff from DEP’s Southwest District Office conducted an investigation into the City of St. Petersburg’s sanitary sewer overflows. The district office is also working with the City to finalize a consent order that will serve as an enforceable instrument that outlines required corrective actions specific to this system and a compliance schedule for completion of these activities.
For the statewide investigation, DEP contracted with an independent, third-party expert to conduct the evaluation, as the overflows occurred across the state and spanned several regulatory districts.
