To celebrate National Estuaries Day, families are invited to explore a thriving estuarine habitat in Lake Guana and collect with a seine net various fish and crab species to study. This event and all necessary gear, including waders and boots, are provided for free.

“The National Estuaries Day activities being held around the country focus on the importance of these critical coastal habitats,” said Michael Shirley, director of the GTM Research Reserve. “We are excited to host this family seining event and educate our local community about just which critters live within our local estuary and why they are so vital to the ecosystem.”

National Estuaries Week, September 21-27, celebrates the unique habitats where rivers meet the sea. Florida’s estuaries provide more than 95 percent of the state’s recreational and commercial industries fish, crustaceans and shellfish. Estuaries also improve water quality in nearby rivers, filtering future drinking water. Show support by using #CelebrateTheCoast via social media.
