Today the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Park Service broke ground during a ceremony to celebrate the construction of a 34-site campground at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach.

“More access to state parks is one of the primary goals for the department,” said DEP Deputy Secretary Katy Fenton, “The new campground will expand camping opportunities in this area and give residents and tourists another opportunity to enjoy our great state.”

The park’s existing campground is wildly popular, boasting the highest occupancy rate of any campground in the Florida Park Service. Campgrounds and recreation areas provide recreational, economic and quality-of-life benefits to local communities.

The campground will add 30 RV sites and four tent sites to the park’s existing 34 ocean-side campsites. The proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway makes this campground a very popular recreational opportunity. The design work for the project began on July 1, 2013, and the target opening date is spring 2015.

“This expansion of Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach will ensure even more families are able to enjoy the natural beauty and exciting activities our wonderful community has to offer. I am proud to have done some small part in making our local treasure even better,” said Rep. Travis Hutson.
