~P2 week inspires communities and businesses to increase their conservation commitment~

Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection invites all Florida residents to participate in “Pollution Prevention Week,” which begins today and runs through Sunday.

Pollution Prevention Week is celebrated each year during the third full week in September and encourages state residents to participate in roadside-trash pickups, recycling events and water-conservation activities. The week is also a chance to remind all Floridians to contribute to environmental protection by participating in activities like taking shorter showers, committing to recycling at home and preventing the waste of excess foods.

“Pollution prevention makes sense and saves dollars,” said Greg Ira, director of the Office of Environmental Education and Sustainable Initiatives. “Direct cost savings are just part of the equation, pollution prevention also reduces environmental impact, public health threats and regulatory liability.”

Pollution Prevention Week serves as a reminder for environmentally friendly actions by the business community as well. Embracing the use of florescent lighting, introducing corporate-recycling programs and investing in energy-saving technologies are just some examples of how the business community can also help protect Florida’s natural resources.
