Today, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Northeast District presented Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport with the 2014 Environmental Excellence Award.

In 2002, the U. S. Navy facilities located in Jacksonville established the Northeast Florida Environmental Compliance Partnering Team. The Navy’s vision of this team was, “the Navy and regulatory community working together to achieve environmental excellence and accomplish individual organization missions.” The Environmental Compliance Partnering Team includes representatives from Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Naval Station Mayport, Fleet Readiness Center Southeast, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Northeast District, the St. Johns River Water Management District and the City of Jacksonville.

The Compliance Team has been meeting quarterly for over 11 years to develop and maintain a constructive working relationship that identifies and implements innovative solutions for the U.S. Navy in order to improve compliance with environmental regulations and ensure the protection of public health and safety. By cooperatively addressing potential environmental issues before they occur or become serious problems, the Compliance Team has successfully prevented violations and improved environmental compliance and sustainability at the local naval facilities. This effort has resulted in protection and conservation of the natural resources in Northeast Florida.  Because of the long standing commitment to environmental protection by Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport and because of their proactive approach in establishing and maintaining the Compliance Team, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Northeast District is recognizing and awarding them with their 2014 Environmental Excellence Award.
